Dust devils - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Dust devils - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I found this quote from my favourite book, Neal Stephensons Cryptonomicon, on Chris Corrigans website. Randy spent plenty of time chasing and carrying out impromptu experiements on dust devils while walking to and from school, to the point of getting bounced of the grille of a shrieking Buick once when he chased a roughly shopping-cart-sized one into the street in an attempt to climb into the centre of it. He knew they were both fragile and tenacious. You could just stomp down on one of them and sometimes it would just dodge your foot, or swirl around it, and keep going. Other times, like if you tried to catch one in your hands, it would vanish but then youd look up and see another one just like it twenty feet away, running away from you. The whole concept of matter spontaneously organizing itself into grotesquely improbable and yet indisputably self-perpetuating and fairly robust systems sort of gave Randy the willies later on, when he began to learn about physics. There was no room for dust devils in the laws of physics, at least in the rigid form in which they were usually taught. There is a kind of unspoken collusion going on in mainstream science education: you get your competent but bored, insecure and hence stodgy teacher talking to an audience divided between engineering students, whore going to be responsible for making bridges that wont fall down or airplanes that wont suddenly plunge vertically into the ground at six hundred miles an hour, and who by definition get sweaty palms and vindictive attitudes when their teacher suddenly veers off track and begins raving about wild and completely nonintuitive phenomena; and physics students, who derive much of their self-esteem from knowing that they are smarter and morally purer than the engineering students, and who by definition dont want to hear about anything that makes no fucking sense. This collusion results in the professor saying: (something along the lines of) dust is heavier than a ir, therefore it falls until it hits ground. Thats all there is to know about dust. The engineers love it because they like their issues dead and crucified like butterflies under glass. The physicists love it because they want to think they understand everything. No one asks difficult questions. And outside the windows, the dust devils continue to gambol across the campus. I find this particular quote interesting for two reasons. First, the description of dust devils as matter spontaneously organizing itself into grotesquely improbable and yet indisputably self-perpetuating and fairly robust systems is one of the best demonstrations of complexity theory that Ive ever seen. Thats exactly what its about. Order appearing out of nowhere, air and dust suddenly organizing itself. Also the vortex itself has no central structure, no core. At any given moment, the vortex consists of the air and dust passing through it at that particular instant. Later, most of that material may have been replaced with new stuff as the vortex moves. Which is true of all living systems, including humans. Did you know, that the individual atoms and molecules in your body are continually being replaced? That some years from now, youll have a mostly new body, since the matter has been replaced. What remains the same is the organization of that matter. The blueprint. The software, if you will. Youre a funnel, sucking up mass. The other reason I find this quote interesting is the described conflict between engineers and physics students. I studied IT with both engineers and university students, and let me tell you, thats exactly how it was. The university crowd takes the moral high ground because they dont care about the real world, while the engineers laugh at them for just that. Well written, funny and real. Thats Cryptonomicon. Now read it! Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. How Your Executive Job Search is Affected by Search Engine Optimization
How Your Executive Job Search is Affected by Search Engine Optimization Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has many different functions and benefits. You can either greatly benefit from SEO when youâre searching for an executive job, or you could fall way behind the rest. Being discovered is one of the most important things in a job search today. You may have a great LinkedIn profile, but if you donât have the right keywords on your profile, recruiters wonât be able to find you. Here are some tidbits about SEO you should know about so your job search is affected by it in a positive way. What Does Search Engine Optimization Accomplish? When recruiters search for candidates for an open executive position, they will use certain keywords in their search engine. SEO works to deliver the most relevant results based on those keywords. Hence, itâs important for you to know which keywords should be used throughout your executive profiles on each platform you use online. If youâre somewhat unfamiliar with SEO, you canât just stuff your LinkedIn profile with keywords and expect to be discovered. In fact, this will go against you for SEO purposes. You need relevant information about yourself to go along with the keywords sprinkled in here and there. Use The Right Keywords The best place to find the proper keywords to use would be in the companyâs job posting or on the companyâs website youâre applying to. Most of the phrases and keywords have to do with certain expertise theyâre looking for, so you should be able to fit them in naturally if you possess those qualities. Place Your Keywords Appropriately For SEO purposes, you should put an emphasis on having your keywords at the top of your page, whether itâs a personal blog, LinkedIn profile or any other online executive profiles you have. Once you develop your profile or online resume, it wouldnât be a bad idea to have an expert check your page for SEO so you can maximize your chances of being discovered. Proof Everything Thoroughly It goes without saying, but you should proof anything you put online multiple times. Typographical errors or poor grammar not only looks bad for your c-level personal branding, but it can also hurt your job search from an SEO perspective. This is especially true if your typo comes in an important keyword, so be sure to proof your profiles thoroughly and have a second set of eyes look at them as well. Professional Resume Services offers expertise in the complexities of SEO. We can fully optimize your LinkedIn profile to match the branding you strive for in your executive job search. If you need any assistance or advice regarding SEO and your job search, feel free to contact us at any time.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Professional Resume Writing Service
Pros and Cons of Hiring a Professional Resume Writing ServiceOne thing that you can count on with the help of a professional resume writing service is a polished and complete resume that is well prepared. Even though these services can help you with some basic drafting, there are still certain things that you have to know before you hire anyone. This article will give you all the information you need about the pros and cons of hiring a service to create your resume. If you are working with a reputable and reliable company, then you can expect your resume to be ready in two weeks or less. For that reason, you don't want to wait too long. That way, you don't end up paying too much for the time it took to create your resume. One of the most important things you should do to get the job you want is to establish a good first impression. It is not enough to put together a decent first impression; you need to convince the employer that you would be a good fit for the position. Without a convi ncing first impression, your application will never get any attention and you won't get the job. That is why you should consider a professional resume writing service when you are looking for a service to write your resume. A professional resume writing service can deliver your resume with one letter. All you have to do is type the information into a text box, add the job title, and press the submit button. After it is finished, the service will also compile your information, send it out, and submit it to several companies. The problem with many job searches today is that companies are only looking for resumes that are professional. They look for certain personal details that are unique and follow a certain format. If you just leave them off of your resume, they will still probably give you an interview. However, if you put these details in, you may have a better chance of getting an interview as opposed to someone who doesn't put their personal details in their resume.Sometimes, you will hear horror stories about the quality of resumes they send out. In the past, a resume that had an employer's name, phone number, and email address was all they sent out. Today, some companies will still give out these old fashioned resumes. For that reason, when you look for a company to send your resume to, you should make sure that it is a professional resume writing service. The last but most important thing to remember is that you don't have to create a perfect resume. You can give it some ideas to make it more professional looking, and your resume will still get attention. But, if you send it out without using the services of a professional resume writing service, you won't get a call back.

Learn more about the USAA Checking account What to look for in a checking account With so many financial institutions offering checking accounts today, you might start to feel a little light-headed at the options. Wondering which checking account is right for you? Here are a few key factors to look at before you open an account of your own: No or low monthly maintenance fees If a checking account costs you $10 a month to hold onto, youâre being charged $120 a year for nothing. There are too many free checking account options for you to be paying even a nominal $5 per month. Most of the choices found on this list are monthly maintenance fee-free like the Discover Checking, Aspiration, and FNBO Direct Checking. The HSBC accounts are practically free since the monthly fee is waived if you maintain a minimal balance and/or direct deposit. Bottom line, donât settle for a checking account that charges a monthly fee. Ever. Transaction limitations Many checking accounts will waive the monthly fee (all of the cool banks are doing it), but theyâll hit you somewhere else it really hurts. Namely, transactions. Checking accounts that limit your transaction ability or charge hefty fees after the first few transactions kind of defeat the purpose of a fee-free account. Look for an account instead that offers no limitations on withdrawals, deposits, and money transfers. ATM access Another important âfeatureâ of a good checking account is the accessibility of ATMs. This is another area where banks often hit unsuspecting customers hard because when youâre stuck without cash and need to take out money, youâll do it at any ATM you can find, even if it incurs a hefty service charge. A good checking account will have ample ATMs across the country and wonât charge you for using them. HSBC and Discover have tens of thousands of machines all over the world and wonât charge you to use them. Aspiration really takes the cake here though, allowing you to use any machine anywhere, reimbursing you any service fees incurred. Mobile app or online access While you might not consider yourself the most tech-savvy individual, most people would be hard-pressed to name a service that they use on a regular basis that doesnât offer online or mobile access. In todayâs connected society, we need everything easily accessible, at our fingertips, 24/7, and that includes our banking. Not every bank will offer a dedicated mobile app, but a good checking account option will, at the very least, have smooth, integrated online access. If you can take that experience to your mobile device, well, thatâs all the better. Pros cons of different types of checking accounts When you are weighing your options, itâs important to consider the different types of checking accounts before you settle on the one thatâs right for you. After all, whatâs good for one person or situation wonât be good for someone else. Here are a few of the pros and cons associated with the most common types of checking accounts: High-yield checking account Pros: Low or no monthly fees Can accrue interest on your balance Cons: Must maintain a high balance throughout the month, each month Good for: If you keep several thousands of dollars in your checking account each month, a high-yield checking account is great for you. Rewards checking account Pros: Earn rewards on everyday spending Get a lower interest rate after a certain amount of usage Cons: Usually come with higher than average monthly fees Good for: People who use bank services such as debit cards, direct deposit, and other bank services on a regular basis will benefit from this rewards program Second-chance checking account Pros: Low minimum balance requirements Low monthly fees Cons: Generally restrict your access to some basic services until youâve âprovenâ yourself to be trustworthy Good for: Anyone whose account has been closed for delinquent payments or behavior and wants a second chance Joint checking account Pros: Easily allows two people to access the same account Useful for couples, colleagues, or relatives to share their resources Cons: Can easily fall into overdraft because multiple users are withdrawing from the same account Good for: Couples who want to have a communal household budget account FAQs about our best checking accounts Thereâs a lot of information about different types of checking accounts. Is there an easy way to figure out which one is really the best for me? While every person and situation is unique, there are a few basic ITTT scenarios when it comes to checking accounts. For example, If you regularly carry a balance of more than say $2,500, then you might as well enjoy the benefits of a high-yield checking account. These come with no monthly fees and offer you a chance to get your money working for you. If you have bounced many checks, had an account closed in the past, or have many unresolved bills, you may be limited to which accounts you can open. If this is your situation, a second-chance account may be your best option. If you need to share your account with a business partner, spouse, or older child, a join account is helpful. If youâre still not sure, read through some of our other articles about checking accounts to get a better idea of which one is suitable for every situation. I deposited a check from my landlord for some repairs I covered last month, but the money isnât in my account. Why not? To understand why your money isnât in your account, you have to understand how the money actually gets to your account to begin with. Itâs not an instantaneous thing, despite living in a primarily digital world, itâs a process. The money has to go to a clearing house, and then to the writerâs bank, and then finally the funds are transferred to your bank. Since the process takes time, the money only shows up a few days later. And sometimes, theres a lag at one of the stages, taking longer to get to your account. Other reasons a check may take longer to clear is if thereâs a hold on your account, the check is from out of state, or for some other reason including bank clerical errors. If you donât see the money in your account after standard business processing time, be in touch with your bank to ensure there wasnât a mistake on their end. I had a rough month last month and ended up withdrawing more than I had in my account. What will happen to my checking account? Many checking accounts offer overdraft protection. This insurance policy is helpful if youre traveling and not keeping track of your expenses or if you have a month when youâre withdrawing a lot. Itâll basically cover you for the amount that youâve overdrawn from your account. If you donât have this insurance, the transaction will probably not go through. Just remember, though, with overdraft protection you are getting charged a fee for the protection and youâll still have to pay back the money (itâs not free!) So, account holders need to be careful not to get too comfortable with overdraft protection or you could wind up in substantial debt. I bounced a check recently. I thought I had money in the account but it wasnât enough to cover the full amount. Now what? Bouncing a check is bad on two counts: You will have to pay a service fee. Chances are youâll pay two, one to the bank and another one to the merchant (recipient of the check). With bounced check fees averaging around $27 a piece, youâre talking about a pricey mistake if you make it too often. Youâll end up getting a mark on your record for delinquent behavior. Bouncing a check is a sign of irresponsible account maintenance. This is not a good sign and can affect future financial options. Youâll want to do your best to avoid bouncing checks, and if itâs already happened, deal with it responsibly and then put a plan into place to ensure it doesnât happen again. Summary Today, checking accounts not only make life easier, but they come with a lot of benefits to the account holder as well.
