Kudos to the Johnson Johnson new Candidate Experience Platform Shine

Kudos to the Johnson Johnson new Candidate Experience Platform Shine One of the most frustrating things a job seeker faces is not knowing anything. We go from knowing everything (in our past jobs) to being totally in the dark. We go from the popular kid to the teenager wishing someone would ask him/her out. We go from being a contributing team player to the kid pleading PUT ME IN, COACH! All the while, we dont know why we arent asked on the date, or put into the game. We do what we think we should do, but we are left with rejection and no insight into why we are getting rejected. This is especially confusing when we are ideal for the jobs we apply to, and then we hear we went with someone else. Almost as frustrating is applying somewhere and hearing crickets for days and weeks. Are they even considering me? I havent gotten called in yet for an interview does that mean they are slowly evaluating and still collecting resumes, or does it mean they are in round one of interviews and I didnt make that list (but maybe none of them will work out, so I still have a chance!). AH, the frustration!!! Enter a company that hears this, and has made steps towards fixing it. Reading this article is like a shot in the arm: Johnson Johnson’s new hiring platform promises not to leave job applicants in the dark I dont know how well this will work, but just that they acknowledged the problem, and our pain, is awesome. THANK YOU JJ! Some parts I love: Since the tracking system updates in real time, applicants can see where their application is at any given moment, plus get a feel for how long it takes to move between points. Job seekers can also follow Johnson Johnson’s new  Twitter handle for the platform,  @JNJShine,  for information and to direct message recruiters with questions related to their job applications. We never rush into hiring decisions, but what we’re able to do is be much more transparent with job seekers in terms of what they can expect,” Gehring told  Ladders. Shine provides job recommendations for other positions at the company to those who don’t make the cut, according to Gehring. Gehring said that when they approached job seekers about how Johnson Johnson could improve, transparency  was their top concern. At the end of that article says Sjoerd Gehring (pictured to the right, Global VP of Talent Acquisition Employee Experience), the person interviewed from JJ, said they modelled this not after hiring industry best practices, rather after consumer best practices that we are seeing from Amazon (tracking packages in real time) and Netflix (recommending relevant content).   SUPER IDEA!   Cross polination at its finest. I really, really, hope this works, and catches on to other companies. At the very least the conversation is moving forward in a good way! I redesigned my site. Hooray!

I redesigned my site. Hooray! You know how  Marie Kondo tells you to go through your closet and throw out all your clothes because you want to start a new part of life? I did that with my website. If youre the impetuous type, you throw out your clothes and buy new ones later. I did that, too. After twenty years of blogging and redesign, after redesign, after redesign, my site is like sedimentary rock. You can see the remnants of features long gone. And when the developers are digging around, invariably they pull out one little pebble and all sorts of crap starts falling. I told the developers they would break the site if they werent careful. The told me they have redesigned sites much bigger than mine. So the developers broke my site. And then the design team that works with the developers for optimal integration priced a redesign of my site at $40,000. The account manager explained nuances of the totally unnecessary proprietary redesign system. I remember being in his position and thinking everyone over 40 is technically incompetent. I fired him. And everyone else. I googled WordPress templates and I couldnt believe how far the design industry has come. I paid $30 for a template. And I published a brand new site way before it was finished. For a week  Lorem ipsum was all over my site. There were pictures of my dog as placeholders. As I wrote real copy readers started sending in copy edits and critiques. My redesign was going great. Until the  Hong Kong protests started. Stephanie is working with me on the site and she lives in Hong Kong. She started a routine where shed work during the day and protest at night. Then she switched to working during the day and stopping in time to get to the airport to help shut it down. The redesign was in phases: The first part of the redesign, I was screaming: How are designers still charging so much money? Their careers are over. The second part of the redesign was me yelling about Hong Kong protests: China is going to overrun the place. Its inevitable. Just get out. Youre playing music on the deck of the Titanic. Stephanie argues that the Titanic metaphor is unjustified. But no western country will let her immigrate. I thought maybe she could come to the U.S. and declare asylum, but it took four seconds to see that all of Hong Kong has already thought of that. So the Chinese government was pretending to be Hong Kong police and  they tear-gassed  every living thing including Hong Kong dogs. And our daily meetings were full of front-line news. For example, porn sites in Hong Kong shut down during the protests so more people would participate. And parents formed carpools to pick up kids when they were done protesting. I dont want to be a strikebreaker or redcoat or whatever you call a person going against a movement to secure rights. So I told Stephanie site changes can wait, and I published the site as-is. There is still stuff to do. But every time you notice something, like the archives are not quite right, remember that every error we put up with on the site is our contribution to the fight for rights in Hong Kong. Or something like that. Also, my Marie Kondo top-level navigation: I deleted everything that did not give me joy. It always surprises me how central coaching is to my life because I used to hate coaching so much. I can remember when people who were in their 50s would hire me, and Id think, Why are they asking for advice? Who cares what they do? Theyre almost dead. Now when someone in their 50s signs up for a coaching session they were born the same year I was. And I find myself feeling grateful that Im getting to hear how other people my age are doing their lives. And it turns out were all doing some version of trimming our top-level navigation and supporting someone young who is fighting for whats right.

Dust devils - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I found this quote from my favourite book, Neal Stephensons Cryptonomicon, on Chris Corrigans website. Randy spent plenty of time chasing and carrying out impromptu experiements on dust devils while walking to and from school, to the point of getting bounced of the grille of a shrieking Buick once when he chased a roughly shopping-cart-sized one into the street in an attempt to climb into the centre of it. He knew they were both fragile and tenacious. You could just stomp down on one of them and sometimes it would just dodge your foot, or swirl around it, and keep going. Other times, like if you tried to catch one in your hands, it would vanish but then youd look up and see another one just like it twenty feet away, running away from you. The whole concept of matter spontaneously organizing itself into grotesquely improbable and yet indisputably self-perpetuating and fairly robust systems sort of gave Randy the willies later on, when he began to learn about physics. There was no room for dust devils in the laws of physics, at least in the rigid form in which they were usually taught. There is a kind of unspoken collusion going on in mainstream science education: you get your competent but bored, insecure and hence stodgy teacher talking to an audience divided between engineering students, whore going to be responsible for making bridges that wont fall down or airplanes that wont suddenly plunge vertically into the ground at six hundred miles an hour, and who by definition get sweaty palms and vindictive attitudes when their teacher suddenly veers off track and begins raving about wild and completely nonintuitive phenomena; and physics students, who derive much of their self-esteem from knowing that they are smarter and morally purer than the engineering students, and who by definition dont want to hear about anything that makes no fucking sense. This collusion results in the professor saying: (something along the lines of) dust is heavier than a ir, therefore it falls until it hits ground. Thats all there is to know about dust. The engineers love it because they like their issues dead and crucified like butterflies under glass. The physicists love it because they want to think they understand everything. No one asks difficult questions. And outside the windows, the dust devils continue to gambol across the campus. I find this particular quote interesting for two reasons. First, the description of dust devils as matter spontaneously organizing itself into grotesquely improbable and yet indisputably self-perpetuating and fairly robust systems is one of the best demonstrations of complexity theory that Ive ever seen. Thats exactly what its about. Order appearing out of nowhere, air and dust suddenly organizing itself. Also the vortex itself has no central structure, no core. At any given moment, the vortex consists of the air and dust passing through it at that particular instant. Later, most of that material may have been replaced with new stuff as the vortex moves. Which is true of all living systems, including humans. Did you know, that the individual atoms and molecules in your body are continually being replaced? That some years from now, youll have a mostly new body, since the matter has been replaced. What remains the same is the organization of that matter. The blueprint. The software, if you will. Youre a funnel, sucking up mass. The other reason I find this quote interesting is the described conflict between engineers and physics students. I studied IT with both engineers and university students, and let me tell you, thats exactly how it was. The university crowd takes the moral high ground because they dont care about the real world, while the engineers laugh at them for just that. Well written, funny and real. Thats Cryptonomicon.
